Bite marks on our tongues, Part II

An Al-Anon friend passed out a page of slogans and other gems at a meeting and I put it up on my bulletin board. My favorite part is the “comments to use” section, which consists of brief sentences to use when you’re talking to someone who is drunk, deluded or just plain crazy.Example: your hard-drinking spouse says, “I’m just going to have two.” You’re thinking: You’ve never had two drinks in your life! Here comes another binge in which you disappear for an unknown period of time.Your reply…See More

Bite marks on our tongues

One of my relatives said something that stopped me short. She said her father wasn’t an alcoholic and that he only went to AA meetings to get his DUI court papers signed. The instant I heard this, I experienced a twitch in the gut and a kind of palpitation running up and down my bone structure. I, being a good Al-Anon, said nothing. As every one of us co-dependents knows, it doesn't do you any good to talk back to crazy. Talking to a drunk or someone in total denial just doesn’t do anyone any…See More

Ooowahahaha! the 13th step!

My friend suggested a subject for this blog, Responsible Sex in Recovery. But who in the world ever wanted that? I want it to be the forbidden fruit, as delicious as being shot at and not getting hit. Dangerous and wicked, something of which my mother would never approve. Listen to the language: from sweet, like “stealing a kiss” to “getting laid,” like a body on a cold slab. There’s the f-word in all its permutations, the adjective dirty, smut the noun. An elegant word like fellatio becomes…See More

It takes a village, idiot

It takes a village to get a person clean, sober or to break the bonds of codependency. It really does. Membership in the 12-step village overlaps; there are sex addicts in AA meetings, overeaters in Al-Anon, pure schizophrenics in the hallowed halls of the neighborhood Alano Club. In recovery, it takes all kinds. This is the story about a man we called Special Ed. Not to his face, because that would have been cruel. I guess it was cruel anyway, but we never said we were saints. He got that name…See More

Keep it simple, Simon

“That’s why I’d rather invest in panty hose than in communications satellites or in motel chains than fiber optics. The simpler it is, the better I like it. When somebody says, “Any idiot could run this joint,” that’s a plus as far as I’m concerned, because sooner or later any idiot probably is going to be running it.”
